- Trinity(KDE3) Desktop – Image From Trinity Screenshots
This tutorial is for those who miss KDE3 and just can’t seem to get used to KDE4. There is now a new desktop environment called “Trinity” which is basically the further development of KDE3 (see the screenshot). You can install it by following the following instructions.
Add these lines to the end of your sources list, if you are running an older version of ubuntu please see this page before continuing.
deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu oneiric main
deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.13/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.13/ubuntu oneiric main
Next you want to add the GPG Signing Key.
sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net –recv-keys 2B8638D0
Next simply make sure you are up-to-date and install Trinity.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-default-settings-trinity kubuntu-desktop-trinity
Thats it you should now be able to logout, switch sessions and login to KDE3. Enjoy! =)
I discovered your site web site on the internet and check a number of your early posts. Always keep on the very good operate. I recently extra up your Rss to my MSN News Reader. Looking for forward to reading a lot more from you afterwards!…
Nice post. I was checking constantly this blog and I’m impressed! Very helpful information specifically the last part I care for such information much. I was seeking this particular info for a long time. Thank you and best of luck.
Another wonderful publish on running a blog! Thanks so much to take time to share a person information and wisdom along with other writers.
Very informative blog. I especially appreciate content that has to do with beauty and fitness, so it’s of particular interest to me to see what you have here. Keep it up! facial exercises

I’m impressed, I have to admit. Genuinely rarely must i encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and without a doubt, you could have hit the nail on the head. Your thought is outstanding; ab muscles an element that too little consumers are speaking intelligently about. I am delighted that I stumbled across this at my hunt for some thing about it.
This looks great! The only problem is that it’s Linux, of course.
Thats an advantage not a problem dear…I used to have kde3 earlier and am still nostalgic for it.
while adding GPG Signing Key, I get following :
“Executing: gpg –ignore-time-conflict –no-options –no-default-keyring –secret-keyring /tmp/tmp.kchE7ErWAA –trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg –keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg –primary-keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg –keyserver keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net –recv-keys 2B8638D0
gpg: requesting key 2B8638D0 from hkp server keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net
gpg: keyserver timed out
gpg: keyserver receive failed: keyserver error”
I am unable to use the ppa due to this. Any idea how to manually get the signing key as a last option.
Also can I upgrade the trinity desktop to oneiric from meverick for which live CD is available.

For Maverick you would want to use these repositories instead of the ones I posted.
Also for the key, try running sudo apt-get update and then try to get the key again.

I’m on oneiric, and I keep getting
E: Unable to locate package kubuntu-default-settings-trinity
E: Unable to locate package kubuntu-desktop-trinity
I’ve followed the directions precisely, and I can see other packages from the repositories, but can’t seem to find these ones. Anyone else having this problem?
Nathan
masa…
I saw this really great post today….
I have the exact same problem as Nathan D. I’ve followed all the instructions, installed Ubuntu Oneiric from the minimal CD, and configured sources.list to use the Pearson Computing Trinity repos (I used Lynx to pull down the instructions from the Trinity project website, grep to cut out the proper “deb…” lines, and cat to add those to the tail end of /etc/apt/sources.list). I had no trouble importing the GPG signing key. I’ve double and triple checked that I made no mistakes. But I still get the same two errors as Nathan (one post above mine):
Unable to locate package kubuntu-default-settings-trinity
Unable to locate package kubuntu-desktop-trinity
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It seems as if the packages aren’t hosted where they should be.
For another distros, you can see this site : http://trinitydesktop.org/installation.php
Its genial for me , with an old pc , run hiper-faster , i can’t run decently “Ubuntu-2D” that desktop i need wait 15 mins , to system load
But with TDE , i just wait 3 mins
Big follower from this blog, a ton of your posts have truly helped me out. Looking forward to posts!
Any clues as to how far behind the main kubuntu precise release will be a trinity build for precise ? Currently trying to add
deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu precise main
and so on, to the sources.list is just failing. Won’t trying to use the oneiric packages on precise just have dependency problems with libraries and so on ?
I honestly haven’t been keeping up with Trinity since right after posting this guide the repositories turned out to be empty (There were no packages whatsoever at that time even though they were supposed to be there) and I couldn’t find any other repos or download sources at the time so I simply gave up and used KDE4. I would imagine this has been fixed since months have passed since the original posting of this Article but other than that…
Using those packages could possibly cause some problems but I imagine it would be OK, so just be careful when installing. If it tries to remove any packages you don’t recognize I would not allow it to run since chances are it will messup your dependencies, libraries, etc then. If you do install it with no apparent issues you can also try this after installing “sudo apt-get -f install” to automatically install any mucked up dependencies/libraries/etc. I honestly don’t think there should be too much of an issue using a package from Oneiric on Precise but I guess it would always depend on what your installing.
If you want KDE3(Trinity) enough to go through these efforts and would like to be really safe about it, you could always setup a free VM with Precise running on it and then attempt to install the Oneiric packages on there. This way should something go wrong your actual system will be fine, but if it works you will know that you can do this on your real system without much worry. But this takes a little bit of time to setup so its up to you if you would want to take that route. (I usually test bigger things before implementing them so that way I won’t have anything to fix later on if I mess up since I am still learning myself lol)
The reason your sources list is failing btw is because there is nothing there for Precise. If you browse the repository you will see they have nothing for Ubuntu 12 yet. (http://trinity.blackmag.net/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu/dists/)
I hope this has at-least somewhat helped your issue in some way shape or form.
Per this posting on their mailing list:
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.desktop.trinity.user/1906
it looks like it will be at least several weeks before there’s a 12.04 release, due to some changes in standard libraries (and possibly other things) that broke Trinity. I’ve seen other postings saying that attempts to build the latest Trinity on 12.04 are failing.
Personally, I’ve decided to load the new PC I’m transitioning to with Lucid, rather than put up with KDE4. A word of warning: when I was installing, pearsoncomputing.net was down, so I decided to use the Ubuntu PPA version of Trinity. That was a mistake: the konsole that comes with it is so seriously broken (every time I try to type in a command, it’s replaced with something else as soon as I hit the spacebar) that I’m feeling nervous about the whole Trinity project.
