Install KDE3 (Trinity) In Ubuntu 11.10
Trinity(KDE3) Desktop – Image From Trinity Screenshots

This tutorial is for those who miss KDE3 and just can’t seem to get used to KDE4. There is now a new desktop environment called “Trinity” which is basically the further development of KDE3 (see the screenshot). You can install it by following the following instructions.

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add these lines to the end of your sources list, if you are running an older version of ubuntu please see this page before continuing.

deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-v3.5.13/ubuntu oneiric main
deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.13/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/trinity/trinity-builddeps-v3.5.13/ubuntu oneiric main

Next you want to add the GPG Signing Key.

sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net –recv-keys 2B8638D0

Next simply make sure you are up-to-date and install Trinity.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-default-settings-trinity kubuntu-desktop-trinity

Thats it you should now be able to logout, switch sessions and login to KDE3. Enjoy! =)

  • This looks great! The only problem is that it’s Linux, of course.

    • Thats an advantage not a problem dear…I used to have kde3 earlier and am still nostalgic for it.

  • while adding GPG Signing Key, I get following :
    “Executing: gpg –ignore-time-conflict –no-options –no-default-keyring –secret-keyring /tmp/tmp.kchE7ErWAA –trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg –keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg –primary-keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg –keyserver keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net –recv-keys 2B8638D0
gpg: requesting key 2B8638D0 from hkp server keyserver.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net
    gpg: keyserver timed out
gpg: keyserver receive failed: keyserver error”

I am unable to use the ppa due to this. Any idea how to manually get the signing key as a last option.
Also can I upgrade the trinity desktop to oneiric from meverick for which live CD is available.

  • 楼主很有才华!

  • I’m on oneiric, and I keep getting
E: Unable to locate package kubuntu-default-settings-trinity
E: Unable to locate package kubuntu-desktop-trinity

I’ve followed the directions precisely, and I can see other packages from the repositories, but can’t seem to find these ones. Anyone else having this problem?

  • masa…

I saw this really great post today….

  • I have the exact same problem as Nathan D. I’ve followed all the instructions, installed Ubuntu Oneiric from the minimal CD, and configured sources.list to use the Pearson Computing Trinity repos (I used Lynx to pull down the instructions from the Trinity project website, grep to cut out the proper “deb…” lines, and cat to add those to the tail end of /etc/apt/sources.list). I had no trouble importing the GPG signing key. I’ve double and triple checked that I made no mistakes. But I still get the same two errors as Nathan (one post above mine):

    Unable to locate package kubuntu-default-settings-trinity
    Unable to locate package kubuntu-desktop-trinity

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
