Ubuntu: Install And Add A Theme To Conky

Conky is a free, light-weight system monitor for X, that displays any information on your desktop. Conky is licensed under the GPL and runs on Linux and BSD.”

In this post I will teach you how to install Conky on Ubuntu using the apt-get command, you will not have to add any repositories or anything since its already in the Ubuntu repositories. I divided the post into how to install Conky and how to install Conky themes to make things easier for people that already have Conky installed.

Install Conky On Ubuntu

To install conky all you will need to do is run the following command, because of the way that themes are loaded we will add Conky as a startup application after we download and install a theme.

sudo apt-get install conky

Install Conky Themes On Ubuntu

To install Conky themes on Ubuntu you will need to find a conky theme, you can get one from many places including gnome-look.org and deviantart.com. Some of them may come with lua scripts and other addons so if this is the case you may need to edit the theme a little bit or just put the files where the theme wanted them originally. (I put all the conky theme files inside ~/bin/conky/ just to keep stuff organized.)

If you just want to install a simple Conky config file without special graphics or anything then you can just copy the file to ~/bin/conky/ and save it as .conkyrc.  Some people say just to copy the .conkyrc into your home folder, this makes no difference honestly but its best to keep things organized. To start conky using your new theme simply run the following command.

conky -c ~/.conky/.conkyrc

The last thing you should have to do is if you want Conky to automatically start when you login is add the service to your startup applications. You should be able to do this by opening the dashboard and typing in “Startup Applications” to automatically find it. Then adding the command like in the screenshot I have attached below.
